Baylor - Booher teaches mother nature a lesson.

This past Saturday the N.E.W.C. held their Annual Spring Open Walleye Tournament presented by Trumbull County Tourism Bureau on Mosquito Lake to kick off the 2010 season. Despite severe weather and several teams dropping out, the event is the largest one we have held yet at Mosquito Lake with 30 Teams participating.

Mother Nature tried very hard to ruin the event with her ugly attitude starting at 9:45 the night before. At 10:00 pm Friday evening there was a tornado reported over the middle of the lake, and winds preceeding it for a few more hours reported over 70 mph. In the morning at 5:30, the forcast was still 25 - 35 mph winds with gusts over 50, and getting worse in the afternoon. Despite her bad attitude for the event, Anglers were anxious to get the season started. With West winds, the anglers were released to almost calm water and able to fish 1/2 the lake without much more than a nice walleye chop.

The high winds showed up at noon with a slight wind direction change more south, and made it a little bumpy , but for the team of Steve Baylor and Steve Booher, it was a little more challenging. At the start of the event the team had run to the far end of the lake over 10 miles away from the launch, and their main motor decided to quit working. Not panicing, the seasoned anglers figured out how long it would take to get back with their kicker, and decided to put their front trolling motor down and start fishing were they were, instead of going all the rest of the way to their best spot. After only a couple minutes their electric motor decided to quit, leaving the team with only their kicker for the rest of the day.

Steve and Steve decided to make the most of their situation, fishing throughout the morning, and then making the 2 1/2 hour drive back to the ramp. Despite the long ride back in high winds, the team was in good spirits as they had a great limit of eye's swimming around in their live well.

Ater all the baskets were weighed, Steve and Steve were declared the winners of the event edging out the team of Mausser and Mausser by 3/4 pound.

Baylor and Booher claimed their top prize of $ 2,500.00, and they also won an additional $ 250.00 from Vic's Sport Center of Kent Ohio for buying their boat from them, for a total of $ 2,750.00.

Baylor and Booher were also tied for the Big fish of the event with a 3.48 pounder until one of the last teams to weigh in John Maholic and Al Lockwood brought in the big fish for the event at 3.56 pounds. The big fish for the event was worth $ 600.00.

The event saw only 12 ohio teams participate which was extreemely dissapointing stated Tom Means. "I would think with all the walleye anglers in the state, and several of the tournament anglers showing up for the weigh ins, that they would want to compete for the best pay out of the year on their home lake". "I am extreemely pleased to see we had 20 teams from outside the area traveling from Pennsylvania and New York, with some spending the whole week their. I know the local businesses really appreciated the boost in local sales generated from the event".

Joe and Cathy (Mosquito Lake Marina) a big thank you for all the extra help in cooking the food, and providing us a sheltered area for us to weigh the fish!!
